A client from Anchorage contacted Perfectionist Auto Sound and Security while searching for a 2016 Toyota FRS sound-deadening solution. The client planned to upgrade his sound system in the future but wanted to reduce the noise level in the vehicle first. We had a look at the little sport coupe and discussed what options were available. This FRS is a rare TRD Release Series 1.0 model that includes a TRD aero kit and side fender garnish, a quad-tip exhaust system, and HID headlamps with LED daytime running lights. This particular vehicle is number 932 of the 1,500 units to be built.
The client liked our plan and was anxious to experience the results.
We started the project by pulling the car into the bay and running it through our check-in process. We confirm that all of the electrical systems in the vehicle are working properly and record any damage or panel misalignments. Next, we removed the interior door panels and the factory plastic vapor barrier. We cleaned up the black butyl that holds the plastic in place and thoroughly prepped the panel to ensure the new deadening would adhere securely.
We cut a sheet of SoundSkins Pro sound-damping material to fit the door, using the factory barrier as a template. SoundSkins Pro is a premium deadening material that features a 1.5 mm-thick butyl damping layer topped with a 3 mm layer of acoustic foam. When applied to the metal panels of the vehicle, it adds mass to damp the transmission of sound from the exterior of the car. The foam layer ensures the wire harnesses, door release cables and inside door panel will not buzz or vibrate against the metal shell.
The last step in the doors was to pull the factory wiring harnesses through openings in the deadening and reinstalled the factory speaker.
Trunk Noise Elimination
The next step was to treat the trunk area. We removed the floor and side panels, as well as the trunk lid trim panel. After cleaning the surfaces, we applied two sheets of SoundSkins Pro to the floor and inner fenders, and a third sheet to the trunk lid. We cut reliefs in the floor pieces to allow for contouring to the shape of the spare tire well. We are glad to admit that we take extra care in ensuring the SoundSkins logo on the damping is always oriented in the proper direction.
